Hypnotherapy & NLP for phobias

Phobias are one of the
fastest things I fix.

A phobia is not a personality trait. It is a learned response your unconscious mind filed as fact at some point. And what was learned can be unlearned, usually in one or two sessions.

If you have one of these,
you're in the right place

These are some of the most common phobias Helen works with. If yours isn't on the list, get in touch anyway. Phobias are phobias. The mechanism is the same regardless of what triggered yours.

Fear of flying Fear of spiders Fear of snakes Fear of needles and injections Fear of heights Fear of driving Fear of enclosed spaces (claustrophobia) Fear of vomiting (emetophobia) Fear of dentists Fear of dogs Fear of medical procedures Fear of open spaces (agoraphobia) Fear of blood Fear of storms Fear of the dark Fear of water Fear of choking or swallowing Fear of death

A phobia isn't irrational.
It's a filing error.

You already know your phobia doesn't make logical sense. You know the spider is tiny and you could squash it. You know statistically a plane is a very safe place to be. You know the dentist is trying to help you. Knowing all of that makes absolutely no difference whatsoever when the response fires. And this confuses and frustrates people enormously.

So here is what is actually happening. Think about the Biochemist. Inside your mind there is a primitive part of your brain, designed about 100,000 years ago with one job: keep you alive. It is exceptionally good at that job. The problem is it cannot tell the difference between a real threat and a perceived one. It only knows what it has been taught.

At some point, and often it was just once, your unconscious mind decided that the thing you are now afraid of was dangerous. Maybe it was a scary experience. Maybe it was seeing someone else's reaction. Maybe it was just a moment where something surprised you at the wrong time. Whatever happened, your brain filed it away under DANGER and set up an automatic alarm system.

Now, every time you encounter that trigger, or even think about it, the alarm goes off. Your biochemist hits the button, floods your system with adrenaline and cortisol, and your body goes into full threat response. Heart pounding, breathing shallow, every cell in your body saying get out. All because of a filing error made at one moment, sometimes decades ago.

The good news about phobias is that the unconscious mind learns fast. Which means it can also update fast. Unlike some patterns that have layers of history to work through, a phobia is usually a single filing error, and a single filing error can be corrected.

This is exactly why phobias are among the fastest things to change in hypnotherapy and NLP. We are not spending sessions talking about your fear or gradually exposing you to it over months. We are going directly to the part of your mind where the response is stored and updating the file.

What you can expect

Phobia work is some of the most satisfying work Helen does, because the results tend to be fast, clear and lasting. Here is what the process looks like.

1

Free 15-minute consultation

A quick conversation about what the phobia is, how long you've had it, and what has happened when you've tried to address it before. Helen will give you a straight answer about how many sessions she expects you to need. For a straightforward phobia without underlying anxiety, that is usually one to two.

2

Online pre-session course

Before your first appointment you get access to Helen's pre-session video course. It walks you through how your unconscious mind works, why the phobia response happens, and what to expect in the session. Clients who understand the process tend to get better results. It takes about 30 minutes and you go at your own pace.

3

First session (90 minutes)

Helen takes a thorough history and maps exactly how the phobia works for you specifically: what triggers it, how you represent it internally, what state it puts you in. Then the first session of change work. For many phobias, this is where the bulk of the shift happens. Some clients notice the change is complete after this session. Others need a second to consolidate.

4

Second session if needed (60 minutes)

For some phobias, a second session to consolidate the work and check in on how the old trigger is responding now is useful. Sometimes the fear itself is gone but the old habit of anticipating it needs updating. Helen will be straightforward about whether a second session is actually needed or whether you're good to go.

5

Your personal resource hub

Within 24 hours of each session you get access to your online resource portal with hypnosis tracks and technique reminders specific to your work. Yours to keep. After a phobia is cleared, most people don't need them for long because the response is simply gone, but they are there if you want them.

What about if anxiety is part of it too?

Some people come in with what looks like a specific phobia but there is underlying anxiety running alongside it. Fear of flying with broader anxiety around control, for example, or needle phobia tied to a history of medical trauma. When that is the case, the work takes a little longer, usually 3 to 4 sessions, because we are addressing the phobia and the underlying anxiety. Helen will identify this in the first session and adjust the program accordingly. She won't book you for sessions you don't need.

Why phobias respond so quickly

A phobia is usually one event

Unlike depression or chronic anxiety which can have layers of contributing history, a phobia is often a single moment that got filed incorrectly. One filing error is faster to correct than a pattern built up over years. That is one of the main reasons phobias tend to shift so quickly compared to other issues.

The unconscious mind learns fast

Your unconscious mind learned the phobia response very quickly, often in a single moment. That same speed works in your favour when you are giving it new information. NLP techniques like the Fast Phobia Cure work precisely because they use the mind's own speed against the pattern.

We work at the right level

You cannot think your way out of a phobia because the thinking brain is not where the response is stored. Hypnotherapy and NLP go directly to the unconscious level where the alarm is set. That is why talking about your phobia for years rarely fixes it, and why changing it at the right level can happen in a session.

You do not have to face the thing

Traditional exposure therapy asks you to gradually approach the thing you are afraid of until the response diminishes. That is effective but it is also uncomfortable and takes time. The NLP and hypnotherapy approach changes the internal response first. The trigger stops being a trigger. No exposure required.

Real people, real results

★★★★★

“I had a needle phobia so bad I was avoiding blood tests my doctor needed. I was embarrassed about it because it seemed so silly. One session with Helen and I had the blood test the following week. I genuinely could not believe it.”

“I hadn't flown in eleven years because of fear. I had a work trip coming up and a friend suggested Helen. After two sessions I flew to Melbourne and back. I was nervous beforehand but on the plane I was actually fine. It felt like a different brain.”

“I'd had a spider phobia my whole life. My kids thought it was funny but it was actually affecting me daily, checking rooms, not going in the garden. Helen sorted it in one session. I still think spiders are a bit gross but they don't send me into a panic anymore.”

Things people ask before booking

For a straightforward phobia without underlying anxiety, yes, often. Phobias are among the fastest things to change with hypnotherapy and NLP because they tend to be a single unconscious response rather than a layered pattern. That said, some people benefit from a second session to consolidate the change, and if there is broader anxiety involved the work takes longer. Helen will give you an honest estimate after the free consultation.
No. The work happens inside the session, working with how your mind represents the trigger. You will not be asked to hold a spider, look at needles or get on a plane as part of the treatment. The goal is to change the internal response first. What happens after that is up to you.
Yes, and often very quickly. Your unconscious mind has been running the phobia response for a long time, which means it is very well practised. But it is still just a pattern. The fact that it is old does not mean it is permanent. Helen has worked with clients clearing phobias they have had for 30, 40, even 50 years.
This is worth discussing in the consultation. If the phobia is tied to a traumatic event, the work is still possible but it needs to be approached more carefully. Helen works with trauma-informed techniques and will map exactly what is going on before doing any change work. If she feels the work is outside the scope of what can be addressed safely, she will tell you and refer you appropriately.
Exposure therapy works by gradually approaching the thing you fear until the anxiety response diminishes through repeated contact. It can be effective but it is uncomfortable and often slow. Hypnotherapy and NLP change the internal response without requiring exposure. Rather than teaching your nervous system that the thing is safe through repeated experience, we update the part of your mind that decides it is dangerous in the first place. Different level, faster result.
Yes. Online sessions via Telehealth are available for clients anywhere in Australia and are just as effective for phobia work. All you need is a quiet space and a reliable internet connection. Helen sees online clients most days by appointment.
Helen has heard everything. A phobia of cotton wool balls. A phobia of buttons. A phobia of specific sounds. There is no phobia that gets a raised eyebrow in this room. The unconscious mind can learn a fear response to anything, and that is genuinely not a reflection on you. You will need to describe what happens when the response fires so Helen can map it accurately, but there is no judgement and no need to feel embarrassed about what set it off.
